INTRODUCTION:
The 16th International Spin Physics Symposium, SPIN2004,
will be
held during October 10-16, 2004 in Trieste, Italy. The Symposium is open
to all scientists, regardless of citizenship and nationality. The Symposium
will be organized by the Trieste Section of INFN (Istituto Nazionale di
Fisica Nucleare), and will be hosted by the Abdus Salam International
Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Miramare, Trieste, Italy.
This Symposium is the third joined International Symposium of the
Nuclear Spin Physics and High Energy Spin Physics. The International
Symposium on High Energy Spin Physics was held every two years. The last
one took place at Protvino, Russia, in 1998. The International Symposium
on Polarization Phenomena in Nuclear Physics was held every five years.
The last one (the 8th Conference) took place at Bloomington, USA, in 1994.
Since the year 2000, the International Spin Physics Symposium series
joined together the High Energy Spin Symposia and the Nuclear Polarization
Conferences. Thus the scientific programme of this Symposium includes the
topics of relevance to spin physics in medium-low energy reactions and
polarization phenomena in nuclear physics, as well as those relevant to
high energy spin physics. The previous two editions of new series of
Symposia were held in Osaka, Japan (October 2000) and at BNL, USA (September
2002), respectively. The Trieste Symposium is the third of the series.
Spin is a key element in the present and future development of
particle and nuclear physics. Indeed spin plays a paramount role in studies
of fundamental symmetries, static particle properties, and structure of
fundamental interactions. Studies of polarized reactions could possibly
open the road in the search of new kinds of interactions. Similarly, spin
physics will allow decisive progress in the understanding of nuclear
reaction dynamics and of the structures of hadron-nucleon many body systems.
Technical developments and application of spin physics are also very
important.
SYMPOSIUM TOPICS:
- Spin and Fundamental Symmetries
- QCD Spin Structure of Nucleons
- Spin Beyond the Standard Model
- Spin in Soft Hadronic Reactions
- Soft Spin Physics with Photons and Leptons
- Spin Physics in Nuclear Interactions
- Acceleration, Storage, and Polarimetry of Polarized Beams
- Polarized Sources, Targets, and Polarimetry
- Future Facilities and Experiments
SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMME:
The Symposium will consist of plenary talks (by invitation) and
contributed talks in parallel sessions. Presentations in the parallel
sessions will be selected by the Local Organizing Committee from the abstracts of
contributed talks. The second Circular will contain information about the
scientific and social programs, instructions for submitting contributed
papers, as well as hotel and travel information.
PROCEEDINGS:
All invited talks and accepted contributions will be published in the
Proceedings. Instructions for the preparation of manuscripts will be sent
directly to all the speakers. A complimentary copy of the Proceedings
will be sent to all registered participants.
REGISTRATION FEE:
The registration fee will be 250 euro for participants, and 150 euro
for students. The fee for late registration will be 300 euro and 200 euro respectively.
The registration fee will also cover a copy of the Proceedings and the
Symposium Banquet.
LANGUAGE:
The official language of the Symposium will be English.
SYMPOSIUM SITE:
LOCATION:
Main Building of the ICTP, in Miramare, about 6 km from Trieste.
Good and easy connections by public transportation to downtown Trieste.
TRANSPORTATION:
The Trieste airport, located in Ronchi dei Legionari, is about 20 km
from the Symposium site. In correspondence with most flights there are
bus connections to Miramare/ICTP and to the railway station downtown
Trieste.
ACCOMMODATION:
For a limited number of participants cheap accommodation can be
provided in the Miramare campus in the ICTP guest houses (Adriatico Guest
House and Galileo Building). A few nice hotels are located in the close-by
village of Grignano, at really short walking distance from the ICTP.
A rich selection of hotels, from moderate to expensive, is available
either downtown Trieste, or in the surroundings.
SUPPORT:
Funds might be available from the ICTP for some participants
from developing countries. People interested are invited to look at the list
of 2004 ICTP Scientific Programs on the web page
http://www.ictp.trieste.it
The organizers are trying to make special grants available for a few
students.
